The first Newcleus LP, Jam on Revenge, was a bit of a disappointment, and their second album, Space Is the Place, did even more poorly upon release in 1984.

"Computer Age (Push the Button)" was a more mature single, with accomplished rapping and better synthesizer effects, and it also hit the R&B Top 40. Newcleus - Jam On It (Jackal and Hyde Remix). The single hit Top 40 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1983, and its follow-up, the more popular "Jam on It," reached the Top Ten and crossed into the Hot 100, where it peaked at number 56. A huge street success, the track became known unofficially as "the Wikki-Wikki song" (after the refrain) when it was re-released later that year on Sunnyview, it had become "Jam On Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)." The track, "Jam-On Revenge," impressed producer Joe Webb more than the other Newcleus material, and it became the group's first single, released in 1983 on Mayhew Records. With several minutes left at the end of the tape, Newcleus recorded a favorite from their block parties, with each member's vocals sped up to resemble the Chipmunks. The foursome named their group Newcleus as a result of the coming together of their families.īy this time, Cenac had begun to accumulate a collection of electronic recording equipment, and the quartet recorded a demo tape of material.
Many members - MCs as well as DJs - came and went as the group played block parties all over the borough, and by 1979, the group centered around Cenac, his future wife Yvette "Lady E" Cook, Monique Angevin, and her future husband, Bob "Chilly B" Crafton.
The origins of the group lay in a 1977 Brooklyn DJ collective known as Jam-On Productions, which included Ben "Cozmo D" Cenac, his cousin Monique Angevin, and her brother Pete (all of whom were teenagers and still in high school). Finally, the entire last chorus is rapped by Cozmo D, as Chilly B had not learned his part yet.Newcleus contributed a true electro classic in "Jam on It," a Top Ten R&B hit that has been immortalized on hundreds of hip-hop mixtapes and often included in even techno DJs' sets. Of course, the missing part of Chilly B’s rap and the first chorus, both of which were removed by Jonathan Fearing but replaced in the Definitive Version release are here as well. Also forgotten and missing from the released version is Chilly B’s rhythmic electric bass track, though it is not remembered whether it was actually ever recorded in the studio. Speaking of which, those long forgotten pads that are under where the singing parts should be are missing from the released version and were probably removed by Jonathan Fearing. Their singing parts are not included, though it is not remembered whether that is because they were not written yet when this was recorded or because the tracks were used instead for the pads. Nique D and Lady E did the Superman rhyme, though it was just for reference as it was always planned that it would be done in Wikki-Wikki voices. This original features no Wikki-Wikki voices as they were ad-libbed live in the studio. Positive Messengers members were all Christian, which led to them creating songs with a message. The group was formed originally as Positive Messengers following DJ shows in parks and blocks as Jam-On Productions. It was released in 1984 by Sunnyview Records. Since the song and track were brand new to the group when they went into the studio they actually are much more familiar with the final released version, and much of what was found on this tape had been forgotten. Jam on Revenge is a studio album by the American group Newcleus. Unlike the other Newcleus songs on the “Jam On Revenge” album, “Jam On It” was written right before it was laid 24 Track, and much of it was actually worked out in the studio. This is the actual master that was used to write “Jam On It”, so it is the actual original version.
